Last Wednesday it was time again for our technical meetup, and despite the typical autumn weather outside, the turnout was fantastic! In an atmospheric venue in the center of Almelo, tech enthusiasts gathered for an evening full of knowledge, inspiration, and camaraderie. This time, the evening was entirely dedicated to Linux security and cybercrime.
A Warm Welcome
The evening started with a warm welcome for all attendees. Our guests were greeted with a drink and a tasty bag of fries. The relaxed and informal atmosphere ensured that everyone quickly felt at ease, providing the perfect opportunity for participants from diverse backgrounds to get to know each other and immediately strike up the first conversations.
Cybercrime Through the Eyes of the Police
The evening was kicked off by a special speaker: Hanko, from the cybercrime team of the East Netherlands Police. With an impressive presentation, he took us into the world of digital crime. He not only highlighted the methods and techniques used by cybercriminals but also the actions the police take to combat these threats. Hanko shared interesting examples of completed police investigations and gave us insight into how companies that have fallen victim to cybercrime behave.
Technical Break
After the first presentation, it was time for a short break. This gave attendees the chance to discuss the content of the first session while enjoying delicious snacks and drinks.
Defense from the Linux World
The second presentation was given by none other than our own Lead System Engineer (Dave Fortuijn) at Shock Media. Drawing from his experience at a Managed Hosting provider, he gave an in-depth look into how we are attacked day and night. Dave showed how Linux and open-source software play a crucial role in securing our environments. Using our security platform Wazuh, we continuously monitor for suspicious patterns and take preventive action to fend off attacks. His presentation delved deeply into the technical details: from the typical attack patterns we encounter to the way we configure our security platform to protect clients. We also gained insight into the latest trends and threats we see in the hosting landscape, where we host tens of thousands of applications for our clients. With his pragmatic and technical approach, Dave captivated the audience and inspired many with his hands-on insights.
Closing & Networking
After the presentations, there was plenty of opportunity to chat and network. It was great to see people from various backgrounds and levels of experience come together and share one common passion: technology. Upon departure, everyone received a unique Shock Media “patch your sh*t” t-shirt as a memento of a successful evening full of knowledge sharing and connection!
